World Conker Championships

The World Conker Championships take place on the second Sunday of October at The Shuckburgh Arms in Southwick, just outside Oundle.

It is one of Northamptonshire’s most distinctive annual events, bringing together competitors, spectators, food stalls, Morris dancers, beer and a healthy dollop of English eccentricity.

A very unusual day out

The championship is a lot of fun and all in a good cause. What begins as a simple game of conkers soon becomes a lively village event, with people travelling from far and wide to watch competitors battle for the title.

Even if you have not played conkers since school, it is hard not to enjoy the spectacle. The rules are taken seriously, the atmosphere friendly, and the whole day has the sort of character that makes it feel properly local and memorable.

Conkers, controversy and character

The World Conker Championships have even attracted national attention, with recent mutterings about alleged cheating adding to the event’s folklore.

That is all part of the charm. Beneath the headlines, this remains a good-hearted celebration of a very English tradition, with plenty to enjoy whether you are competing, spectating or simply turning up for the food, drink and atmosphere and the pub serves a pint of beer from our brewery.

Taking part

If you want to compete, it is best to register online in advance through the World Conker Championships website.

Places are limited, so arriving early is sensible if any on-the-day spaces are available. Spectators should also check the official website before travelling for the latest timings, entry details and visitor information.
